Government Affairs Director Job Description - Posted April 5, 2023
The Baton Rouge Alliance for Students Action works in partnership with parents, community, civic leaders and policymakers to achieve the shared goal of an excellent education for every Baton Rouge student. We are dedicated to elevating the voice of students and families in our community. The Alliance’s work focuses on the areas of: Empowering Families, Elevating Community and Engaging Leaders.
The Alliance’s Political Director is charged with leading the Alliance’s policy platform from vision to reality. The Political Director is also responsible for coordinating the organization’s electoral programs, developing and managing a candidate pipeline, and supporting fundraising of an ambitious budget.
OBJECTIVES OF THIS ROLE
- Lead the organization’s candidate and campaigner pipeline development program, Torch
- Manage relationships with elected officials at the local and state level
- Plan and execute action steps to ensure majority votes in favor of items in the Alliance’s policy platform
- Plan, implement, and evaluate voter engagement and political program
- Represent the Alliance with key coalitions, allies, partners, and other stakeholder groups
- Partner with the Alliance’s communications staff to accurately and persuasively project the organization’s political goals and messages
- Provide high-level strategic advice to CEO and CSO on program development including long-term electoral strategy
- Manage organizational candidate endorsement process during election years, including analysis of district information, candidate alignment, and campaign aptitude in order to make recommendations for resource allocation
- Write and implement campaign plans for electoral activities and issue campaigns including analyzing voter segments, tracking and cataloging polling, competitive reports, and ads, and compiling regular reports of outcomes
- Staff the organization’s affiliated political action committee, including fundraising and compliance support
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- A demonstrated commitment to ensuring access to high-quality school options for every student in Baton Rouge
- Demonstrated experience in government affairs successfully ushering policy items through votes of a municipal or legislative body
- Experience in electoral, civic engagement, or political campaigns, with some relevant connection to candidate politics
- A strong political network and relationships with leaders within Baton Rouge’s political landscape
- Experience working across departments or teams within an organization
- Familiarity with political data, technologies, and best practices in the field
- Independent and strong leader that is able to drive projects and programs to completion in fast-paced environment
- Ability to work within a coalition of diverse organizations and partners
- Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Results-focused and organized
- Self-motivated – proven ability to work independently
- Strong project management and organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex environment
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, mass communications, political communications, or related field preferred
WORK DEMANDS
Motivation and ability to work long hours during election season, to responsively manage stakeholders at all levels, to take ownership of projects, and exercise strong judgment in tough and time-sensitive situations.

The Baton Rouge Alliance for Students works in partnership with parents, community, civic leaders and policymakers to achieve the shared goal of an excellent education for every BatonRouge student. We are dedicated to elevating the voice of students and families in our community. The Alliance’s work focuses on the areas of: Empowering Families, Elevating Community and Engaging Leaders.
The Alliance’s Chief of Staff leads the organization’s administrative affairs and manages the execution of its strategic plan. The ideal candidate balances experience in advancing high impact mission and vision with management and systems acumen. The Chief of Staff will assist the CEO with strategic priorities, and prioritize and monitor tasks related to the execution and implementation of new systems to sustain growth. Other duties include building and sustaining an effective support structure for the organization’s senior leadership team.
OBJECTIVES OF THIS ROLE
●Ensure the Alliance turns strategy into action – and adjusts strategy and actions to align with changes in our context
●Manage the implementation, review, and modification of the Alliance’s strategic long term impact plan to ensure functional and org-wide progress is met and remains aligned with staff capacity, financial resources, and stakeholder support
●Support the development/execution of the Alliance’s strategic plan and assist team with the development of their annual operation plans
●Monitor functional and individual progress towards annual goals, recommend action, and advise CEO concerning interventions as necessary
●Work on the behalf of CEO for critical staff position searches and other org needs
●Oversee coordination of meetings and retreats
●Assist with special projects by conducting research, collecting and analyzing data, drafting reports, and preparing presentations for internal and external stakeholders
●Organize and lead the annual budget development process in consultation with CEO, CSO and staff
●Monitor financial progress and make recommendations to CEO as appropriate, with support from the Operations team
●Anticipate the needs of the CEO and peers on Senior Leadership Team and provide the appropriate support and guidance to ensure the team is operating efficiently and
effectively
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
●College degree required, advanced degree preferred
●Minimum of 4 years of experience successfully leading cross-functional teams
●Demonstrated ability to lead directors and managers in the creation and implementation of multi-faceted operating plans and budgets
●Strong project management and organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex environment
●Excellent analytical, verbal and written communication skills along with a high level of diplomacy, discretion and problem solving ability
●Successful track record of providing advice and counsel to senior leaders
●Experience conducting conflict resolution, coaching, and group facilitation exercises
●High emotional intelligence and ability to lead in ambiguity
●Leadership and negotiation skills are a must
