Baton Rouge Alliance for Students Announces Lisa D. Delpit as Education As A Civil Right Keynote Speaker

BATON ROUGE, LA –The Baton Rouge Alliance for Students is excited to announce Lisa D. Delpit as the keynote speaker for Education As A Civil Right on February 28, 2023.  To mark the end of Black History Month, this event will focus on equity barriers and educational opportunities that remain unequally distributed across different groups in the country and Baton Rouge.

“We are honored to have Lisa Delpit as a keynote speaker. Her inspiring work aligns with so much of our organization’s purpose,” said Adonica Pelichet Duggan, CEO of the Baton Rouge Alliance for Students. “Her bold approach to tackling these important topics is necessary work for our city if we want to get real about challenging the belief gap.”

Delpit is an award-winning author, educator, and researcher who has dedicated her career to addressing the achievement gap in education. She is a recently retired Felton G. Clark Distinguished Professor of Education at Southern University, a Harvard University graduate, and has served as a faculty member at Georgia State University and Florida International University. The Baton Rouge native has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Harvard Graduate School Alumni Award, and was named a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow.

In her keynote address, Delpit will present her work of dismantling the institutional and societal barriers that prevent students — especially students of color — from having access to high-quality education. Additional sessions will include a panel covering the unique role of schools on communities of color and a historically significant bus tour of Old South Baton Rouge. The tour will explore the history of education in Baton Rouge and our city’s role in the civil rights movement through a guided tour of iconic landmarks in Old South Baton Rouge.

Education As A Civil Right will occur at the Capitol Park Museum in downtown Baton Rouge. The event is open to the public and free to attend. To register, visit EACR2023.eventbrite.com
