Betty Mujica-Milano is a community builder, creative thinker, and lifelong Baton Rouge resident who believes some of the best things happen when you get the right people in the same room and ask, “What can we do together?”

As Community Outreach Coordinator at Neighbors Federal Credit Union, Betty gets to ask that question often. She leads the credit union’s community impact work, connecting resources with students, educators, schools, nonprofits, and community organizations throughout the Greater Baton Rouge area. She also leads the Neighbors Community Impact Foundation, overseeing programs that include scholarships, educator grants, volunteer initiatives, and partnerships designed to make a tangible difference in the communities Neighbors serves.

While funding is an important part of her work, Betty is most energized by the relationships behind it. She loves discovering people who are doing something meaningful, hearing the story behind their work, and figuring out how to connect them with the people or resources that can help an idea grow. She believes community impact works best when it feels less transactional and more human.

Betty was born in Puerto Rico and has spent most of her life in Baton Rouge, a place she has come to appreciate even more deeply as she raises her own family here. She and her husband, Eric, are raising two daughters, Lenny Fe and Andie, and motherhood has changed the way she thinks about community leadership. The questions she asks professionally—What do our schools need? Who feels supported? Who isn’t being heard? What kind of community are we building?—have become deeply personal ones, too.

She joined CHANGEMAKERS because she wants to better understand the systems shaping Baton Rouge, learn from people experiencing the community from perspectives different from her own, and become a more thoughtful and effective advocate for the city she loves. More than anything, Betty wants to keep finding ways to connect people, ideas, and resources—and help build a Baton Rouge where more people feel like they have a place in its future.
