Tyrus Thomas is an organizational strategist, leadership consultant, and student development professional dedicated to helping young people, families, and organizations reach their full potential. A Baton Rouge native, Tyrus has built his career around developing people, strengthening organizational culture, and designing systems that create lasting impact. His work spans K–12 education, higher education, nonprofit leadership, athletics, and community partnerships, giving him a unique perspective on how schools and communities can work together to improve outcomes for students.

While many know Tyrus for his time as an LSU standout and former NBA player, those experiences represent only one chapter of a much larger journey. They provided a platform, but his passion has always centered on people. Throughout his career, he has been driven by one question:

“WHAT HELPS PEOPLE THRIVE?”

That question has led him to work across education, leadership development, and organizational strategy, helping individuals and institutions build environments where growth, accountability, and belonging are part of the culture.

Tyrus currently serves as a Student Support Team Specialist with Louisiana Rebirth Blended Learning Academy, where he supports approximately 500 students and their families. His work focuses on identifying barriers to attendance and academic success, strengthening family engagement, conducting home visits, and connecting students with the resources they need to stay on track toward graduation. The role has reinforced his belief that student success is built through meaningful relationships, coordinated support, and strong partnerships between schools, families, and the broader community.

He is also the Co-Founder and Head of Strategy, Culture & Organizational Development at Small Talk Performance Lab, where he leads initiatives that help schools, organizations, and executive leaders build healthy, high-performing cultures. His work includes leadership development, organizational consulting, social-emotional learning resources, and strategic partnerships that equip educators, coaches, and community leaders with practical tools to strengthen both people and systems.

Across every chapter of his career—from coaching high school and collegiate athletes to founding community initiatives and supporting schools—Tyrus has remained committed to serving others and expanding opportunities for young people. He believes that lasting educational change requires collaboration across sectors and that every child deserves access to environments where they are challenged, supported, and inspired to succeed.

As a member of the 2026-2027 CHANGEMAKERS cohort, Tyrus looks forward to learning alongside fellow leaders, gaining a deeper understanding of Baton Rouge’s educational landscape, and contributing his experience in leadership, organizational development, and student support to help shape a stronger future for students across the city.
